Cast life-size at roughly two and a half feet from snout to tail tip, this edition renders one of the most unexpected body plans in the dromaeosaur lineage: long pennaceous feathers anchored to both the forelimbs and the hind legs, posed in the gliding attitude that defined the animal. The slender, biplane silhouette and the whip-thin tail read as motion held still, an object that asks a room to slow down and look upward.
Each element is hand-finished and assembled on a discreet armature, the delicate limb feathers and elongated foot bones detailed individually so the four-winged geometry holds its clarity from across the gallery.
Microraptor is among the few known dinosaurs preserved with long flight feathers on all four limbs, an arrangement central to longstanding debate over how flight first arose.
It was described by Xu Xing and colleagues from the Early Cretaceous Jehol deposits of Liaoning, China, and ranks among the smallest known non-avian dinosaurs.
Study of preserved melanosomes has reconstructed its plumage as predominantly dark with an iridescent sheen, among the earliest dinosaurs whose colour has been inferred from fossil evidence.
