Ankylosaurus — Skull
A low, armoured wedge built to absorb the worst.
This cast renders the broad, heavily ornamented skull of the great Cretaceous tank in full, the bone roofed by fused dermal plates that obscure nearly every cranial suture. Triangular squamosal horns flare from the rear corners and the snout broadens to a wide cropping beak, giving the piece a squat, deliberate authority on a plinth or shelf.
Each cast is hand-finished to bring out the pebbled texture of the cranial armour and the subtle asymmetry of the original bone, so the surface reads as worked stone rather than moulded resin.
The skull of Ankylosaurus was overlaid by fused dermal armour that obscured most of the sutures visible in other dinosaur crania.
Its nasal passages followed a convoluted, looping path through the snout, a feature variously linked to warming inhaled air and to the sense of smell.
Ankylosaurus lived in the closing stage of the Cretaceous in western North America, sharing its world with Tyrannosaurus rex.
