Stegosaurus — Bone
A single dermal plate, the mark of an armoured browser.
The cast isolates one of the great dermal plates that ran along the animal's back, its broad kite-like blade tapering to a rounded base where it once anchored in the skin rather than the skeleton. Held at arm's length or set on a stand, it carries the branching channels that traced blood vessels across its surface, the detail that has fuelled a century of debate over display and temperature.
Hand-finished to preserve the vascular grooves and the subtle asymmetry of a real plate, the piece stands as a complete statement on its own, legible without the rest of the animal around it.
The largest Stegosaurus plates measured roughly sixty centimetres or more across, among the most distinctive features of any dinosaur.
The plates grew within the skin as dermal bone and were not fused to the skeleton, leaving their precise upright arrangement a matter of careful reconstruction.
Grooves on the plate surfaces indicate a substantial blood supply, consistent with proposed roles in visual display and the shedding or gathering of heat.
