Velociraptor — Claw
The retractable sickle that gave the hunter its grip.
This cast reproduces the enlarged second-toe claw, the hooked weapon held off the ground while walking and brought to bear when the animal struck. It presents the bony core alone, which in life carried a keratin sheath that extended the reach further still, and it reads as a single arresting object on a stand or in the palm.
The piece is hand-finished to preserve the sharp ridge and the worn tip, the contours toned to suggest weight and age.
The sickle claw was held retracted off the ground and is thought to have pinned struggling prey rather than slashing it open.
In life the bony core was sheathed in keratin, making the working claw noticeably longer than the bone alone.
Each foot carried one of these enlarged second-toe claws, a defining trait shared across the dromaeosaurid family.

Velociraptor mongoliensis was described by Osborn in 1924 from the red sandstone of the Djadochta Formation, in the dunes of the Mongolian Gobi. The real animal was roughly turkey-sized and feathered — quill knobs found on a forearm in 2007 put that beyond argument — and it hunted with the retractable sickle claw on the second toe, held clear of the ground until it was used. The most famous specimen in palaeontology is Mongolian: the 1971 "Fighting Dinosaurs," a Velociraptor and a Protoceratops buried mid-struggle by a collapsing dune, the claw still hooked into the throat of the other animal. Mongolia's fossils are national property and cannot legally be exported or owned. This form exists in a private collection only as a cast.
